Scripts

  • Nov. 10th, 2009 at 11:02 AM

People often ask me what comics scripts look like — or, at least, what my comics scripts look like, as there is no industry standard for comics scriptwriting. I have a few scripts up here on the site, and you’re welcome to download them. I write in OpenOffice and save in RTF. Beginning writers may find it instructive to compare the scripts with the published work.

(Please, don’t ask to be shown other scripts instead. These are the ones I have available. Okay?)

November 10th, 2009: In yesterday's comic T-Rex and Utahraptor talked about self-charging mp3 players (before everyone died) (quite a bit before everyone died). Utahraptor said "There are physical limits to what a -" before he was interrupted by T-Rex. If he'd been allowed to continue he would have said "There are physical limits to what a device such as that can do, and it wouldn't be enough, as I said earlier - assuming of course that the person lives a sedate lifestyle and barely uses their legs."

I say this because it turns out that people are ALREADY working on T-Rex's invention! In fact, they're such great people that they started working on it even before he invented it, and that's really something. Thank you everyone who sent me links to this Science Daily article and this NPR story. I even got some emails from researchers working on this very problem, which was kind of crazy, because I hadn't expected that! It made me think that if I'd written a comic about how you can converse in English with your dogs now instead, we'd all be waking up today to a world where, come Christmas 2009, a Dog Talker will be on the top of everyone's list!

Anyway that sounds pretty good to me!

UPDATE: Guys it turns out that dog translators exist, I am going to think really hard about what my third invention will be before posting it here; I don't want to waste it.

UPDATE 2: Okay the idea of using breasts as a power source was just a stray thought, I didn't mean for it to come true! I need to get a handle on controlling this new-found power.

Episode 334: Initial Foray into Level 1 Entry Corridor

There's a school of thought amongst some GMs that if you surround railroad tracks with enough atmospheric, pre-written, descriptive steam, they cease looking like railroad tracks any more.

You should start to wonder when the GM has a handy pre-prepared long descriptive speech for pit trap you just fell in.

clear your schedule, clutch your chest

Tweet Me Harder Live, the first live on-stage comedy performance of Tweet Me Harder, the podcast I co-host with Kris Straub, is coming up this Saturday! A few details about the show:

We’ll be at The Complex, a theatre at 6476 Santa Monica Blvd, Hollywood, CA. Parking is always dicey in Hollywood; you’re welcome to seek out street parking for a cheap option, but we will also have valet available (they charge $5). The performance itself is free and no tickets are required, though it would be nice if you’d RSVP on our Facebook event page so we have an idea of how many are coming.

The theatre lobby will be open starting at 7:30 pm; the theatre doors will open at 7:45, and the show will start at 8. It’ll probably run about an hour and a half, and please feel free to hang out afterwards to mingle!

I’m very, very excited about this show and I can’t wait to lunge gracelessly into the performance I MEAN ROCK THE HOUSE WITH COMEDY. See you on Saturday!

The Lost Army

  • Nov. 9th, 2009 at 5:03 PM

This, on the other hand, is amazing.

The remains of a mighty Persian army said to have drowned in the sands of the western Egyptian desert 2,500 years ago might have been finally located, solving one of archaeology’s biggest outstanding mysteries, according to Italian researchers.

Bronze weapons, a silver bracelet, an earring and hundreds of human bones found in the vast desolate wilderness of the Sahara desert have raised hopes of finally finding the lost army of Persian King Cambyses II. The 50,000 warriors were said to be buried by a cataclysmic sandstorm in 525 B.C.

"We have found the first archaeological evidence of a story reported by the Greek historian Herodotus," Dario Del Bufalo, a member of the expedition from the University of Lecce, told Discovery News…

The Point Of Getting Excited

Matt Jones on his generation of the GET EXCITED AND MAKE THINGS graphic: the point of it, its brief history, and its new Creative Commons license. All of which just gives me an excuse to post it again:

The Mechanic Speaks

  • Nov. 9th, 2009 at 11:28 AM

Ariana Osborne, designer of this place, SHIVERING SANDS, etc., talking about POD and the book, because:

…apparently, there’s a bunch of folks paying close attention to how Shivering Sands does so they can figure out if POD is “worth their time.”

And I have absolutely no fucking clue what that means, so I’ve just got to talk about it…
